Externships and Curriculum (2010-11)

These externships were offered during the 2010-11 school year.


The Tennessee Credit Union Academy of Business and Finance at Antioch High School - Externship Company: The Tennessee Credit Union
The Tennessee Credit Union of Business and Finance team from Antioch High School completed an externship with The Tennessee Credit Union. The externship participants observed the business operations in bank security and customer service. Additional activities included learning about TTCCU’s marketing, internal audit, risk management and compliance, accounting, and IT processes. The team submitted a curriculum unit plan designed to teach financial literacy. The culminating project will require students to develop a campaign to promote financial literacy using a cross curricular approach. In addition to designing relevant curriculum, the team also used this time to gain an understanding of the requirements to operate The Tennessee Credit Union branch located inside Antioch High School.
 
The Academy of Architecture and Construction at Cane Ridge High School - Externship Company: Lee Company
Externship participants from the Academy of Architecture and Construction at Cane Ridge High School observed administrative functions and production operations at Lee Company. The educators were able to get a first-hand view of Lee Company’s custom fabrication of plumbing, duct work, and other custom HVAC items. Participants were very attracted to Lee Company’s value of employees with their desire to “hire for life” by spending a large sum of training dollars on each member of their team. In order to do this, the company must value workers that not only have good skills but possess excellent character and work ethic. The team’s culminating project will require students to develop a plan to market Lee Company as a green business.
 

The Academy of Hospitality, Entertainment Marketing & Salon Services at Glencliff High School - Externship: Shoney's
Teachers from the Academy of Hospitality, Entertainment Marketing & Salon Services at Glencliff High School participated in an externship at Shoney’s restaurant. The team observed the process of rebuilding a restaurant menu while taking into consideration budget implications, nutrition standards, and meal balance. Students at Glencliff will recreate this process through a cross curricular study of the history of food trends. Their final project will require students to develop a redesigned menu for a Shoney’s restaurant.

 
The Academy of Health Sciences at Hillwood High School - Externship Company: HCA
Team members from the Academy of Health Sciences at Hillwood High School observed the corporate structure within HCA headquarters, focusing on inter-departmental relationships and community relations at the company. The teachers also spent a great deal of time focusing on HCA’s priorities of diversity and the use of technology. Students at Hillwood will develop a marketing plan that will be presented to HCA’s board with the purpose of combating diabetes in the Latino community.
 
The Academy of Business, Entertainment, Hospitality and Tourism at Hillwood High School - Externship Companies: Holiday Inn Vanderbilt, Hutton Hotel, Belle Meade Plantation
The externship program for teachers of The Academy of Business, Entertainment, Hospitality and Tourism at Hillwood High School was unique as they compared the business processes of three distinctly different venues. During their observations, the team found similarities and differences in each business’ event planning logistics, guest communications, and guest conflict management. The culminating project for students will require planning of a comprehensive event, taking into account all elements of guest services and event logistics.
 

Hunters Lane High School

The Academy of Marketing and Business at Hunters Lane High School - Externship Company: Dollar General
Externship participants from the Academy of Marketing and Business at Hunters Lane High School observed business practices at Dollar General, focusing on the effective usage and interpretation of data. Team members learned how demographics, product arrangement, and inventory positively or negatively affected business performance. The group’s culminating project will ask students to develop a complete business plan, including the need to determine legal steps and regulations. The plan will be presented to academy students, and the best plan, as determined by academy students and teachers, will be submitted to the school’s DECA team for competition.
 
The Academy of Health Science and Law at McGavock High School - Externship Company: Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Teachers from the Academy of Health Science at McGavock High School observed business processes at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Included in their externship program, were tours of Lifeflight, plant operations, the OB/GYN department, and the diagnostics laboratory. Day two featured visits to support services, the Eskind Biomedical Library, the adult emergency department, and the Vanderbilt Medical Group Business Office. The goal of the externship was to understand a patient’s experience from admittance to release. Students will apply these experiences by creating a portfolio that will capture classroom, healthcare related experiences, and developing presentations and performances for a Health Science and Law Symposium.
 
The Academy of Digital Design Communications at McGavock High School - Externship Company: CMT
An externship team from The Academy of Digital Design Communications at McGavock High School observed the process of developing and producing an awards show at CMT. Team members began by learning about the marketing process and the design of advertisements for awards shows. They then moved to technical operations where award show logistics, scripting, set building, and filming were demonstrated. As a result of this experience, academy students will be charged with creating and effectively operating an awards show.
 

Overton High School

The Academy of Engineering at Overton High School - Externship Company: LP Lumber Products
The teacher externship team from the Academy of Engineering at Overton High School spent time observing business processes at LP Lumber products. In addition to gaining an understanding of LP’s product manufacturing process and the system by which products are delivered to consumers, team members spent time focusing on working effectively as a team in order to solve complex problems. To demonstrate these problem solving skills, academy students will be asked to study and make recommendations to LP on whether or not the company should pursue the process of wood pelletization as an alternative fuel source.
