Fisk University

From its founding in 1866 as a liberal arts intuition committed to educating newly freed slaves, Fisk University has been one of America's outstanding universities. It is home of the Jubilee Singers and artists and thinkers such as W.E.B DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, Aaron Douglas, John Hope Franklin, and Nikki Giovanni. Arnold Burger is the liaison between Fisk University and MLK.

Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College is the nation's largest, private independent historically black institution dedicated solely to educating health science professionals. Since its founding in 1876, it has been a leading educator of African American physicians, dentists, and biomedical scientists. The Meharry-State Farm Alliance was formed to meet the challenge of increasing seat belt use among all Americans with a particular emphasis on getting the message to youth between the ages of 16 and 24 to Buckle Up--the message is seat belts save lives. MLK students researched and learned about the issues in primary legislation surrounding seat belts. They conducted observations of seat belt use in September and May, held a special assembly about seat belts, did a school-wide survey, and appeared on a Meharry Health Waves radio program on the Fisk radio station. Irwin Goldzweig is the liaison between the college and school. Dr. John Maupin is the college president.

Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE)

The Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers is proud to be a pencil partner with MLK. The TSPE is a state chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers whose purpose is to promote the ethical practice of engineering and to promote engineering licensure. Much like doctors and lawyers, engineers must be licensed to legally practice engineering. Our work with student programs help encourage American students to pursue postsecondary education in the technical sciences for careers like engineering. Over the last generation, American students seeking careers in the technical sciences have decreased while the universal demand for these skills has increased. Much of the world's engineering and related technical professionals are coming from Asia and Europe. Although our world has become unified in many ways, it is important to develop domestic knowledge and ability in all careers including the technical sciences. The Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and MLK is an obvious partnering relationship toward this goal!

Vanderbilt Pharmacology Department

The department is led by Dr. Heidi Hamm.  The department is dedicated to providing talented high school students with exposure to a research laboratory environment.  To accomplish this goal and get students excited about scientific research, Dr. Hamm assembled the team of Dr. Joey Barnet, Director of Graduate Studies, and Karen Gieg, Educational Program Coordinator, to invite a very limited number of students (2) two from only two public high schools in the Nashville area to work in a research lab in various departments of the university.  These students, who are in good academic standing, at least 16 years of age, and recommended by the MLK faculty coordinator of the program, participated in general lab work, assisted with experiments or data analysis, or completed their own specific project during the program period.
