 The Photo of Library

Library hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library has flexible scheduling; therefore, students may come to the library during class and computer study. Students must have an official note from his/her teacher to access the library during the above times. No more than 5 students are allowed on a note. Students coming to the library between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. should get an official hall pass from the office. The library media center is also open during lunch. Patrons are encouraged to eat lunch first because after they enter the library they must stay the entire period. Students must have a note from a teacher to access the library during lunch time.

Check-out Policy

Current I.D. badges are required for checkouts. Students may not check out materials for other students.

A maximum of 4 books may be checked out for 7th – 8th graders.

Books usually may be renewed. In order to renew a book you must bring the book and your identification badge.

There is a fine of 10 cents a day for overdue books. Seventh and eighth graders are exempt from paying fines.

All students are required to pay for lost books.

Reference books are for library use only. These books may not be checked out.

Library Rules

2. Patrons with overdue materials or fines will not be permitted to check out other materials.

3. Students must have a signed teacher’s pass and must sign in at the circulation desk.

4. Do not bring food or drink into the library.

5. Be seated in a chair and work quietly on appropriate library activity (i.e. reading, researching, studying, and homework).

6. If you must speak with another patron, please whisper.

7. No more than two students may be seated at a table.

8. Patrons should be respectful to the library personnel and other patrons.

Students will be sent back to class for not following the rules. Library privileges may also be suspended for a semester.

Databases

The databases may be used by students at school or from a remote location. The database passwords cannot be posted on our website due to vendor restrictions. Database passwords are confidential and can be used only by the MLK faculty, staff, and students. Please see Ms. Townsel, the library information specialist, for more information about the databases.

The Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a dynamic online library of current topics – the facts as well as the arguments of each topic’s proponents and detractors. This cross-curricular database has applications in language arts, social studies classes and debate forensics. This database presents statistics, government data, laws and legislation, political positions, public policies and more.

The Science Resource Center is an in depth, curriculum oriented science database that provides a one-stop resource for all science related research needs. Content includes more than 30 Gale core proprietary reference titles, 150 full-text science journals (both general and scholarly), more than 8000 multimedia records, links to 500 key science oriented web sites, and a link to Tennessee’s Curriculum Standards for Science with correlated results identified to support each standard.

The Testing & Education Reference Center is designed to help students with admission materials. The online practice tests include: ACT (American College Test), SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test), Military, and etc. In addition, the site contains financial aid and other monetary sources available.
