MLK is an academic magnet school for Davidson County students in grades 7-12. The school's highly challenging curriculum emphasizes science and mathematics. Located in downtown Nashville, MLK is housed in the old Pearl High School, one of the first black high schools in Nashville.

MLK's school mascot is the lion, and the school colors are royal blue and silver. The school motto is: "Excellence is our hallmark."
