Every year, UT-Knoxville hosts a math contest that is open to TN high school students who have completed Algebra II.
The individual contest consists of two rounds:
1) Everyone takes a multiple-choice test.
2) The top 50 scorers on the multiple-choice test then take a free-response test.
The top 10 scorers on the free-response test are awarded 4-year $4,000 scholarships to UT-Knoxville, which can be applied to any major.
MLK students have done very well in the last two years.
- In 2005, MLK junior Saran Raju (Class of '07) finished in the Top 10.
- In 2006, eight of the Top 50 students were MLK students, and MLK senior Eugene Park (Class of '07) finished in the Top 10.
There is also a quiz-bowl-style math bowl that takes place that day, where 3-member teams compete in a double-elimination tournament. The winning teams in each category (large school and small school) earn money for their schools.
Calculators are not allowed in any part of the individual contest or the math bowl.
This year's UT/Pro2Serve Math Contest will be held during the school day on Thursday, October 25, at UT-Knoxville. Therefore, we will leave MLK immediately after school on Wednesday, October 24, and stay in Knoxville Wednesday night. We will return to MLK immediately after the math contest on the evening of Thursday, October 25.
