What is Destination Imagination?
Desination Imagination (or "DI" for short) is a team-based, creative problem solving program. Teams of two-to-seven members choose one of the five Central Challenges offered and then create a solution to that challenge over a period of several months. The more creative they are, the more points they earn at the tournament!  The teams will also use their creative problem solving skills when forming a solution to an Instant Challenge, which is not known until tournament day.

PLEASE BE AWARE:
One of the most important elements of the DI program is that THE TEAM ONLY USES IDEAS FROM WITHIN THE TEAM! Team members are not allowed to use ideas from anyone outside the team (including friends, family members, teachers, even team managers). In fact, if a tournament official finds out that a team has used any ideas from outside the team, the team will receive a deduction in its score.  So as you look over the five Central Challenges below, PLEASE KEEP ALL IDEAS TO YOURSELF UNTIL YOU KNOW WHICH CHALLENGE YOU ARE DOING AND WHO IS ON YOUR TEAM. Thank you.

2007-2008 DI Central Challenges
Challenge A: Obstacles, Of Course!
- Design and construct an obstacle course with 3 to 10 different obstacles.
- Design and construct a vehicle that will travel through the obstacle course.
- Create and present an original, non-verbal story about overcoming obstacles.

Challenge B: Hit or Myth
- Create and present an original story about a myth, legend, or folk tale.  The story must be set in a nation other than the team's own.
- Design and carry out a "myth investigation" that investigates facts about the team's myth.  The results of the investigation must be presented as part of the story.
- Create a "myth-ecol replica" from the team's chosen nation, using recyclable materials.

Challenge C: DI've Got a Secret!
- Create and present an original story about a secret.
- Create a masquerade character that appears to be something until its true identity is revealed.
- Integrate a team-created optical illusion into the story.
- Design and create three set pieces that will be connected to form a new set piece.

Challenge D: Chorific!
- In a 30-minute time period at the Tournament, create a six-minute improvisational skit about an ordinary, randomly selected chore.
- Attempt to overcome two randomly selected obstacles (both related to your chore) in your skit.
- Create a sound design that will be presented during your skit.
- Demonstrate one improvisational technique during your skit.
- Integrate a famous person (randomly selected from a list of people the team has previously researched) into your skit.

Challenge E: Switch!
- Design and build a structure made completely of wood and glue and test it for strength by stacking weights upon it in two different orientations.
- Have a two-minute "stop time" while the team removes the weights after the first test and places the structure in a different orientation for the second test.
- Research a manufactured item that can serve more than one purpose.  This will be called the "SWITCH! item."
- Create and present an original story in which the team demonstrates two different purposes for the SWITCH! item.
- Present a freeze-frame scene as part of the story during the stop time.
