Graduation and Scholarships

AP Scholars

The College Board designated 91 MLK students as AP Scholars in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. Nine MLK students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams. These students are: Evan Broder (06), Lily Crabtree (06), Jae Eom (07), Xue Feng (06), Stephanie Finch (06), Amy Kessler (06), Eugene Park (07), Saranya Sathananthan (06), and Sarah Thomas (06).

AP Tests Given


Science

Out of more than 350 8th and 9th grade students in Metro, two students from MLK were able to spend their Spring Break at MIT. These students were Dah’jyon Walden and Aaron Broder. Those who received honorable mention designation were: Layth Ezzeir, Patrick Gallagher, David Gilmore, Justin Harrer, Andrew Johnson, Deborah Koch, Ziwei Leng, Melissa Halperin Manley, Jennifer Rachel Oakes, and Rita Pfeiffer.

Regional Science Fair

There were more than forty awards claimed by MLK students at the Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair at Austin Peay State University. At the middle school level, Luke Delheimer and James Clute were awarded the Middle School Grand Prize and Alternate Grand Prize respectively. Monica Guan was the Alternate Grand Prize winner at the high school level.

At the middle school level, James Clute placed 1st, Lauren Lu placed 2nd and Troie Journigan and Alexa Romersa tied for 3rd. John McNiell and Katie Solomon tied for Honorable Mention. In 8th grade, Luke Delheimer placed 1st, Brandon Tansil and Aaron Broder tied for 2nd and Kayla Saito placed 3rd. Sarah Deel and Amanda Mouser won 3rd place in the Team Projects category.

At the high school level, Monica Guan placed second in the Engineering division. Hairan Zhu placed third in the Biochemistry division. Those students who won awards from sponsors included: Kayla Saito, Luke Delheimer, James Clute, Monica Guan, Brandon Tansil, Aaron Broder, James Clute, Lauren Lu, Katie Solomon, Tracey Hicks, Preston Palm, and Mihir Patel.

Science Olympiad Teams

The MLK Division B team finished second at the regional competition and sixth at the state competition at UT Knoxville. The Division C team took first at the regional competition and fourth at state.

Claire Chaurand earned National First Place honors in Le Grand Concours, 2007. Claire was only one of six students to receive the recognition in Level 1C out of 221 entrants.

Russian

Kiril Troynovskiy and Stephan Zavalin participated in the regional Olympiada of Spoken Russian, sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). These students received high scores on their levels and were awarded gold medals from ACTR. Stephan Zavalin was the only Tennessean awarded a gold medal and certificate from the prestigious State Pushkin Institute in Moscow. Stephan received a gold medal and Kirill received honorable mention in the 25th National Russian Essay Contest.

Regional National History Day Winners

Senior Division of Group Exhibits: 1st Place: Xiao-Yu Qi and Yufan Yan; 2nd Place: Halston Balthrop, Aileen Patimeteeporn, Jordan Reff, and Rachel Warrick. Senior Division of Individual Exhibits: 2nd Place: Makeshia Welch; 3rd Place: Leslie Dawson. Special award for “The Best Use of Primary Source Documents:” Xiao-Yu Qi and Yufan Yan. Finalist in the junior division: Brandon Holt, with his documentary on Emmitt Till.

Varsity

Gerald Robinson was a finalist for the AA Mr. Basketball award. This is a statewide award given out each year during the TSSAA State Tournament finals. Gerald led the Midstate in scoring 28.9 points each game.

MLK defeated CPA 49-43 to capture the District 9-AA Basketball Tournament Championship. Gerald Robinson led all scores with 32 points. Robinson was named the district and tournament's MVP. Fellow senior Eugene Kirk joined Gerald on the All-Tournament team, and the two along with sophomore Antone Christian were named to the All-District team. Coach Shelton was awarded District Coach of the Year honors. The Royals made it to the Regional semifinals by defeating Marshall County.

Freshmen

Ebieye Ekadi is the first freshmen girl basketball player from MLK to be selected to the first all district team. Makeshia Welch was on the honorable mention.

The freshman boys are city champs! They won 46-40 over Hillsoboro.

The team finished the season in Second Place in the district and city.

Varsity

Team placed sixth in the field of 22 competing teams. After a day and a half of competing, here are their accomplishments: Taylor Fortune (Co-Captain), 160 lbs., 4-0, First Place; Jessie Watkins (Co-Captain), 189 lbs., 4-0, First Place; Kyle Chandler, 145 lbs., 4-1, Third Place; Andrew Lowe, 103 lbs., 4-1, Third Place; Nick Johnson, 125 lbs., 3-2, Fourth Place.

Junior Varsity team

Placed fourth in the field of 22 competing teams with the following results: Alex Roberson, 215 lbs., 3-0, First Place; Max Slifka, 189 lbs., 3-1, Second Place; Jackson Heilbron, 119 lbs., 1-2, Fourth Place; Kyle Simmons, 160 lbs., 3-2, Fourth Place.

Middle School Wrestling

Congratulations to the following middle school wrestlers for placing in the Western Division Wrestling Tournament: Will Farrer, 114 lbs., Second Place; Austin Gillogly, 175 lbs., Third Place; Audrey Bloom, 106 lbs., Fourth Place; John Burnley, 122 lbs., Fourth Place; Wilson Barnett, 158 lbs., Fourth Place.

Congratulations to the following middle school wrestlers for placing in City Championships Wrestling Tournaments at McMurray Middle School: Wilson Barnett, 158 lbs., Second Place; Austin Gillogly, 175 lbs., Third Place; John Burnley, 122 lbs., Fourth Place.

Soccer

Congratulations to 7th graders Will Cross, Harrison Hilt, and John McNiell, who were selected to the Olympic Development Program. These students, who play soccer at the Brentwood Soccer Club, are three of the 40 selected boys throughout the state to represent Tennessee in the ODP soccer program.

Middle School Girl’s Team

The team placed 2nd in the city. Members of the team were: Carly Caldwell and Allie Horick (Captains); Amanda Adams, Madie Bowden, Elizabeth Bowden, Tania Dawant, Katie Caldwell, Sam DeBord, Danielle Evrenson, Laura Goad, Tracey Hicks, Emily Kleinfelter, Savannah Loudermilk, Ashley Manus, Jasmine Owens, Rita Pfeiffer, Leeda Roshanfar (the team’s top scorer), Lori Spain, Emily Stump, Melonie Wagner, and Merit Willis.

Varsity

The boys cross country team finished 7th out of the 25 teams in the Metro Championship. The boys were led by Stephen Wathen (20th), Ryan Graves (37th), senior Ben Brannon, Micah Wasserman, and Andrew Reed.

Junior Varsity

The JV boys finished 6th out of 15 teams in the Metro Championship. They were led by Jason Fox (31st), Bradley Houston, and Armond Moyo.

Cross Country Roundup: MLK girls cross country team finished 4th in Region 5 A/AA this year. The girls were led by Captain Christina Moradian, junior captain Sarah Buchanan, Claudia Valenzuela, and Jessica Stump, with outstanding performances by Chesney Hardin, Rachel Livsey, and Alicia Serrato.

The boys team finished 3rd in Region 5 A/AA and qualified for the state meet. The boys were led by junior captain Stephen Wathen and Ryan Graves, who finished 9th and 10th respectively in the Region Championships. In the State Championship Meet, the boys finished 4th out of the 24 A/AA  teams that qualified for the state. The boys were led by Ben Brannon (25th) and Andrew Reed (30th) at the state meet. Both the boys and girls teams were coached by Coach Dorris and Coach Williams who will also be coaching in the spring.

Middle School Boys Track Team

Along with having an undefeated regular season, the middle school boys track team was also the city runner-up. The individual city finalists were: Alex Gray- 110m Hurdles, Ernest Ekwugha- 110m Hurdles, Gerald Batey- 800m (Runner-Up), Joe Francisco- 800m, Ernest Ekwugha- 400m, and Lyle Burns- Shot Put, 4x100 Relay, 4X400 Relay.

Freshman Boys Track Team

Buster Relays Champions as well as Eastern Subsection Champions Individual Subsection Results: Walter Corn-Long Jump (Runner-Up), Triple Jump (Runner-Up), Max Slifka- Shot Put (Champion), Discus (Runner-Up), Andrew Reed- Pole Vault (Runner-Up), Evans Pope- 400m (Runner-Up), Micah Wasserman- 800m (Runner-Up), 4x100- Champion, 4x200- Champion, 4x400- Champion, 4x800- Champion.

Football

Hillsboro High School football team earned a spot in the 4A state finals for the fourth year since 2001. Matt Arent was a key player as the team quarterback. This team made it to the TSSAA BlueCross Bowl Class 4A state football championship at MTSU.

Cheerleading

Congratulations to Keshia Agazuma who made the 2007-2008 Varsity Cheerleader Squad at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville! She will receive a full scholarship to UTK for this accomplishment.
